Portland
We planned to spend the weekend in Portland so Laurel and I decided to go all out and get a fancy hotel. Fancy as in the Courtyard Marriot.
There was one small bump in our plans that we had to take care of in Portland. The car started to make a funny noise. After consulting with both of our father's and trying to diagnose the sound ourselves, we thought it would be a wise decision to get the car checked. We all thought it might be the brakes and it turned out that's exactly what was the problem. So a souvinear from Portland was new brakes!
We arrived in Portland Friday morning and waited in a long line for the famous Voodoo Doughnuts. While in line, I used my phone to figure out what kind of donuts we would get. Everyone one of them sounded delicious. It doesn't help to look at their menu while you are hungry. I am not a huge fan of donuts, but I couldn't resist not ordering the donut with a slice of bacon on top! Sounds kinda gross, but the maple frosting and the bacon were a match made in heaven. Our eyes were bigger than our stomaches and we ordered 4 donuts. Needless to say, we didn't finish them.
After stuffing our faces with donuts, we went to Powell's bookstore. It is a 4 floor used bookstore. We spent a couple of hours in there and probably could have spent a couple more.
For lunch we hit up the food trucks that line up all in one location. Pam, I didn't find your hummus truck you mentioned, but I did enjoy a yummy gyro instead.
Laurel received suggestions from her friend who lives in town of the things to do in Portland. We decided to hit up the 80s dance party on Friday night. I luv 80s music! It was a fun night and we danced the night away on a bouncing floor. Yes, the floor bounced. It was a bit challenging to hold a drink in your hand on a bouncing floor all the while trying to dance to 80s music. Can you picture it? We had a blast :)
Saturday morning we met up with Laurel's old high school friend, Sarah, at Stumptown Coffee. We have been told that we had to try this coffee...neither of us are coffee drinkers. Laurel had tea and I had a pepsi! We hit up the Saturday market (Meg we unfortunately only went to the Saturday market and not the one at Portland University) and the food trucks again. It's helpful for all the trucks to park in one location, but the novelty of the food trucks like in DC is taken away when you don't know where it will be next!
There was a sign that said Portland is weird. Portland is weird...great people watching! Hipsters (Vikash you would love it here) and sadly many homeless people. It also has tons of food- all we do is eat! Laurel read great reviews of a small Italian restaurant on yelp so we made reservations. Good thing we got a table because it filled up fast. A big bowl of spaghetti and meatballs topped off a long day!
This morning we went to Multnomah Falls about 40 minutes away from the city. It is known as the 2nd tallest year round waterfall. It was quite a sight. We hiked an uphill 1.5 mile path with 11 switchbacks to arrive at the top of the falls. Personally, I thought the bottom of the falls was prettier than the top but we needed the exercise so the hike was worth it.
It has not failed yet at every destination on this road trip, we have been asked if we are sisters. Neither of sees the resemblance. Maybe if our own sisters were along with us we wouldn't be asked this question. It would be very obvious that Laurel has a twin and we are not related :) But, we'll take it as a compliament, politely say no, and move on!
Now, we are on the road again to Crater Lake. After two nights in a nice hotel bed, we will be back to camping and sleeping on an air mattress :)
